Like the rising tides on the beach, new styles are sweeping in this spring. Coastal Cowgirl is a trending aesthetic that blends design elements of the southwest with the luxuriously understated style of the coast.
Our home decor buyer, Doug Major, and AFW Interior Designer Erika Cwik collaborated to bring together two timelessly trending looks.
What Is a Coastal Cowgirl Style?
Are you moving from the west coast to the southwest, and you still want to keep that coastal vibe? Or maybe you’re just catching up on Yellowstone and want to channel your inner Beth Dutton, you can add rustic charm to your cool, coastal rooms.
Coastal cowgirl can make light and airy rooms feel warmer and homey. Replace your cotton and jute (the fabrics used to make twine or sacks) with leather and textured throws for richness, swap cool tones for colors of the sunset to compliment the sun-washed accents from your coastal space.
In our recent This or That video, Doug dives into how to build on a coastal room to give it a little more sophistication than a hat and cowgirl boots. Check it out here!
What Is a Coastal Style?
Coastal – what is that exactly? Think of a relaxed, breezy, beach inspired vibe. Soft, airy hues (grays, light blues), neutral tones (sand, warm beige) should be your color base to build on. Then, add in aqua blue accents to give your home that ocean-kissed touch.
Light-colored walls can help reflect natural light in the room, making the room feel as open as the coastline. Use light wood and whitewashed finishes where you can, and sprinkle in some wicker, rattan, and bamboo accents. You’ll feel like you’re in oceanfront property right at home. Other coastal design elements include linen and cotton fabrics, like jute or sisal rugs, ocean-inspired art, and glass pieces can make your room feel like a collection of beach treasures brought ashore.
